'Tokisora' machiya house: a beautifully renovated Kanazawa-style traditional holiday house (vacation rental). This charming two-story townhouse is conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from the bustling Omicho Market and is a short stroll from the grand Kanazawa Castle.

Nestled in a picturesque street lined with other traditional machiya homes, 'Tokisora' provides a tranquil and authentic experience of Kanazawa's local life. Thoughtfully renovated to ensure comfort in all seasons, 'Tokisora' features modern amenities such as floor heating and double entrance doors that maintain comfortable temperatures year-round. The private, in-house dry sauna offers a perfect retreat to rejuvenate after a day of sightseeing, regardless of the season.

Step into the main room on the first floor, which seamlessly combines a fully equipped kitchen, living area, serene garden view, traditional tatami room, and a large projector screen for entertainment. The luxurious main bathroom boasts a double-basin vanity, a deep soaking tub overlooking the garden, a cold plunge bath, and an optional dry sauna experience.

The second floor features two spacious bedrooms. The classic tatami room comfortably accommodates up to 3 guests on traditional futon bedding, while the western-style bedroom features a king bed for up to 2 guests. For added convenience, an additional shower room and bidet are also available on the second floor.

A little background on how ‘Tokisora’ earned its name: The name ‘Tokisora’ combines the Japanese characters for “time” (時), “season” (季), and “sky” (空), evoking the idea of a machiya space where guests can lose track of time, like clouds drifting across the sky. During your stay at ‘Tokisora,’ escape the bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in tranquil relaxation.

Its interior is inspired by the 4 distinct seasons of Kanazawa and the beauty that comes along with the changing seasons. ‘Tokisora’ features Kanazawa’s distinct black ‘kawara’ roof tiles and wooden facade for an inviting atmosphere.

By combining the kitchen and living room area, you’ll be able to enjoy preparing meals together with family and friends. Enjoy the view of the ‘tsuboniwa’ garden or a movie on the large projector.

Classic Tatami Room The 1F tatami room can be used as an additional bedroom or a place to store belongings or stretch out and relax. Slide open the ‘fusuma’ doors to create a spacious room that connects to the living room and tatami room, or close them for complete privacy. The original, hand-painted fusuma artwork on the sliding doors depicts the night sky changing throughout the seasons.

Modern Kitchen & Appliances Traditional Japanese homes often used the space beneath stairs as storage. Known as ‘hako-kaidan,’ you would find wooden drawers that were fitted perfectly within the space. ‘Tokisora’ uses this same idea but utilizes the space for a kitchen. This kitchen includes an IH stovetop, refrigerator, microwave oven, toaster, kettle, pots and pans, cooking utensils, cutlery, and more.

Is this a hotel in Kanazawa?: No, this is not a hotel in Kanazawa. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday houses (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kanazawa!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday house, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
