Hisago UMA | 瓢 午の間

20-5 Hyōtanmachi, Kanazawa-shi, Ishikawa-ken 920-0845

A traditional house that has stood the test of time – this Kanazawa machiya house is your gateway to the rich history that permeates this seaside city of Japan.

Hyoutan-machi (瓢箪町)

A name befitting of the town’s history and culture – the origin of this town’s name is said to derive from the plethora of Japanese gourds (hyoutan) that was once bought and sold within this thriving castle city.

The hyotan gourd is a motif that has been incorporated into countless artwork, proverbs, and has also been used in everyday life. Their humorous and memorable shape is representative of good fortune within Japanese culture, and is still relevant in current culture.

This traditional Kanazawa machiya house has witnessed history since the beginning of the Showa Period. Only a short 10-minute walk from the main Kanazawa Station, “Hisago UMA” machiya house sits quietly within a neighborhood steeped in history.
